LOVE IS IN THE AIR AS DARLENE PAYS TRIBUTE TO ELVIS PRESLEY

Brass section to the right, strings to the left. Darlene Love in the middle of a crescendo of sound, paying tribute to the ‘King of Rock and Roll’.

That was the scene at the 17th European Elvis Presley Festival at Bad Nauheim as Darlene, dressed in a glittering outfit, stole the show. What a performer.
Square Rock partnered with the festival, and our team mingled with organisers, performers and so many genuine Elvis fans. Darlene Love is more than just a fan of Elvis Presley. She performed with ‘The King’, got to know him well and was able to tell some wonderful stories from the early years.
Darlene was lead singer with an American girl group, ‘The Blossoms’. They had a recording career in their own right, but took great pride in performing with Elvis. In 1968, Darlene actually appeared in an Elvis ‘TV Special’ programme. She believes that Elvis would have been the greatest gospel singer of all time. Gospel was his mother’s favourite music, and he sang around the house, but his commercial career had to come first.
Darlene said that Elvis wasn’t a white person copying black music. His just loved the songs, and his amazing voice was perfect for gospel.
Darlene Love has just released a 14-track compilation of Elvis’ gospel work. It’s been a busy year for the Grammy Award and Oscar winner. Apart from her work at the European Elvis Festival and meeting the Square Rock team, her August diary included a concert at Graceland, hosted by Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley.

And what did she think of the mural at Bad Nauheim, created by street artist Gnasher inside a tunnel?
Darlene thought Gnasher’s work was “just great”, and she should know!

It’s now or never, Darlene believes, to keep alive the precious memories of a singer who changed so many lives…forever.
